The Naval Air Systems Command intends to issue Contract N00019-99-C-1359 with Lockheed Martin Aeronautical Systems Company (LMASC) for the installation of a maximum of fifty (50) CAINS II Inertial Navigation kits being developed under contract number N00019-96-C-0209. LMASC is presently developing and integrating the replacement navigation and flight display systems (referred to as CAINS) for the S-3B aircraft. Due to current S-3B CAINS shortfalls caused by microchip obsolescence, N88 has directed CAINS II installation rates be accelerated to avoid grounding aircraft due to lack of navigation systems. At this stage in CAINS II development, LMASC is only contractor that possesses the necessary technical expertise, engineering drawings and data to provide the installations in the required timely manner. Additionally, these installations will be performed concurrent with the GPS installations performed under contract N00019-98-C-0060 in order to reduce aircraft out of service time. Note 22.
