Industry input is being requested for a 3-day Forum on the topic of "Remediating Mercury in Soil at the Department of Energy Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant" for characterizing and remediating mercury in soil, sediment and bedrock. The TechCon and Innovative Treatment Remediation Demonstration programs of the Department of Energy (DOE) are coordinating the Forum, which will involve staff from the site remediation contractor, the DOE, responsible regulators, and other stakeholders. Technology providers (vendors) with relevant knowledge in this technical area and wishing to participate in this invitation-only Forum should respond as soon as possible. The procedure is to submit capabilities and experience via the TechCon web site at http://www.ead.anl.gov/techcon using the "Current Project Opportunities" link (Oak Ridge / Mercury in Soil) or contacting a TechCon representative identified above. THIS IS NOT A SOLICITATION FOR BID, but it provides industry participants a unique opportunity to interact first-hand withthe problem-holders and decision-makers who will ultimately be responsible for selecting the interim actions to be implemented. DOE's Oak Ridge Reservation (ORR) is located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The Y-12 Plant, which is one of the three installations of the ORR, encompasses about 324 hectars (800 acres) near the northeast corner of ORR adjacent to the city of Oak Ridge. Built in 1943 as part of the Manhattan Project, the Y-12 Plant is a manufacturing and developmental engineering facility that formerly produced components for various nuclear weapons systems. The soil in the Upper East Fork Poplar Creek (UEFPC) watershed, which is part of the Y-12 Plant installation, contains Hg in quantities greater than permitted by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations for soils. The source of the Hg is from the release of elemental Hg used during the 1950s and early 1960s at the Y-12 Plant. The project team is evaluating characterization and remediation technologies for the treatment of Hg in soil, sediment, and bedrock at the entire Y-12 watershed. However, the Building 9201-2 area at the Y-12 Plant is one of the most immediate targets for Hg remediation. The TechCon Web Site will provide additional details on the Forum and links to support documents, questionnaires, and directions for submitting the required information. The information provided by the responders at this web site will be the only source used for the purpose of preparing a list of INTERESTED, PRE-QUALIFIED SOURCES.
