617/495-7376 The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) requires
the fabrication of a large Zerodur metering structure to fixture two
echelle gratings in the Hectochelle spectrograph for the converted MMT
telescope. The finished dimensions of the metering structure will be
34.7 inches by 16.2 inches by 12.2 inches. The structure will be built
by bonding four (4) pieces of Zerodur, to be supplied by SAO. The
thickness of all bond lines must be extremely precise, i.e. 0.004
inches +/- 0.0015 inches, although this tolerance may be revised
slightly, depending on what adhesive is selected for the bonds. The
Zerodur will be supplied with a tolerance of +0.1/-0.0 of the finish
dimension, so proposer must grind the Zerodur to finish dimension with
sufficient precision to meet the bond thickness specification. All
unbonded surfaces must be ground to 400 grit finish or better. In
addition, there are numerous details -- i.e. holes and grooves -- that
must be machined into the metering structure so that we may fixture
the gratings accurately and stably. Anticipated award date is 30 April
1999. This metering structure is to be delivered FOB Destination to
SAO five (5) months ARO. Only written, fax (FAX 617/496-7992), or email
(eciampaglia@cfa.harvard.edu) requests received directly from the
requestor are acceptable. All responsible sources may submit an offer.
No telephone requests for the solicitation package will be accepted.
