via, juhld@ria.army.mil. We are looking for a DC/AC power inverter. We
need to know if there are any existing commercial power inverters that
meet all of our requirements. If not, can existing inverters meet our
requirements with minor modifications? What modifications would be
needed? Are there any stated requirements that will reduce competition
or increase the price unnecessarily? The inverter will be used to
operate a laptop computer, several battery chargers, and miscellaneous
electrical appliances. It will be mounted to a deck plate inside a
cargo enclosure on a High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicle
(HMMWV) chassis. The inverter will occasionally be exposed to
wind-blown rain from an open door two feet away. Requirements: Nominal
maximum dimensions are 12" wide by 12" high by 15" deep, including the
space required to make input and output connections. Weight shouldn't
exceed 20 pounds. The input and output terminals should be on the rear
of the case and have a cover. Input power is 24 VDC, nominal. Output
power is 110-120 VAC, 60 Hz, single phase, true (pure) sine wave. Rated
output capacity is 1 KW nominal for continuous use. Input connections
are threaded terminal posts. Output connections: 1 standard duplex
outlet (or equivalent) on front panel, plus threaded terminals to
connect wiring for remote outlets, including a separate ground. On/off
switch should be readily accessible, but protected from accidental
operation or shut off. It should have an output overload circuit
breaker and an automatic "low battery" shutdown at 21 VDC with a surge
delay of at least 2 seconds. It should have indicator lights for power
on, low voltage input, overload, high temperature, and low battery
shutdown. It should be rated for continuous operation between 25 and
+120 degrees F with an automatic "high temperature" shutdown at 120
degrees F. Reduction of rated output to as low as 750 watts for
continuous operation at temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit is
acceptable. It should have a "drip proof", stand-alone enclosure,
suitable for fastening to a flat metal deck. Rack mount configurations
are not acceptable. The inverter must be rated for military
cross-country vehicle shock and vibration. You may send comments and/or
product literature by mail, FAX, or e-mail. The mailing address is:
