pg2@inel.gov. A -- Detection of hard alpha inclusions in titanium
billets. LIT-PI-520. This is a potential technology development and
licensing opportunity with Lockheed Martin Idaho Technologies Company
(LMITCO), the prime operating contractor for the Department of Energy
at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL).
LMITCO is developing technology for nondestructive inspection capable
of detecting certain types of inclusions in billets of metal such as
titanium. Inclusions are regions in metal billets that are contaminated
and have undesirable physical properties. It is important to detect and
then eliminate these regions before they contaminate parts fabricated
from the billet. Failure to do so may result in defective parts that
fail during use. Such a technology is of particular interest to the jet
aircraft engine industry for avoidance of such inclusions in jet engine
components. The new technology differs from existing inspection
technology in that the LMITCO technology does not require the presence
of cracks or voids associated with the inclusions for the inclusions
to be detected. LMITCO is seeking a written indication of interest from
industry partners interested in funding a collaborative technology
development project and entering into a license agreement for the
purpose of developing and commercializing this technology. License
terms will include an up-front licensing fee and a running royalty
based on a percentage of sales. This is not an opportunity to provide
goods or services to LMITCO or the Department of Energy. This Request
for Interest (RFI) will close to response 60 days after publication.
