MULTIPLE DOMAIN SECURITY Sandia National Laboratories (Albuquerque, New Mexico) has developed an information security approach that relies solely upon design features currently available in commercial products. Multiple Domain Security (MDS) separates different security levels of information on a single physical network via Commercial off the Shelf (COTS) filtering. The approach utilizes commercial standards and network devices to provide multiple security domain separation. MDS balances security and availability by using independent, mutually reinforcing security layers (COTS filtering). A failure in one layer of security does not affect other security layers. In addition, the MDS architecture supports scalability in the number of security domains allowed within a network. Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) over a fiber optic SONET network provides the information backbone technology for transporting packet data, serial data, voice, and video services. The MDS approach maintains security domain separation across the ATM backbone using a combination of commercial security filters, MAC addresses, IP addresses, socket numbers, security labels, ATM adaptation layers, and permanent virtual circuits (PVC's). All of the elements comprising the first generation MDS architecture are currently available commercial products or features. The Defense Intelligence Certification and Accreditation Support Team (DICAST) has assigned a certifier to the MDS effort. As of March 1999, the MDS approach on the ATM backbone has been approved through the alpha phase of certification. Sandia is making the MDS technology available to companies interested in partnering with Sandia to develop the technology further and/or discuss future applications via licensing or cooperative development agreements.
