C -- FIRE SPRINKLERS, BUILDING 47 SOL 637-36-99 DUE 060899 POC Dave Thomsett 828-299-5830 Contractor shall provide A/E services to fully fire sprinkle Building 47 located at the VA Medical Center, Asheville, NC. Statement of Objectives: Fully fire sprinkle Building 47 to bring it into full compliance with NFPA 101, NFPA 13, applicable North Carolina State Codes, and VA Criteria. Conduct appropriate hydraulic studies to determine adequacy of water supply and pressure. Coordinate with and tie into the fire sprinkler system to be installed by the recently awarded Ambulatory Care Addition Project, a $24 million construction project. Evaluate the feasibility of upgrading the existing fire alarm system to an addressable system. Utilize the VA Fire Protection Design Manual dated March 1, 1996. The A/E shall retain the services of a fire protection engineer for the project in accordance with Qualifications and Scope of Services, Project Fire Protection Engineer (dated March, 1996). Background: Building 47 is the main building providing inpatient and outpatient services at the medical center. Placedin service in 1968, the building is 321,366 GSF. The basement level houses support services, the first floor houses administrative, clinical, laboratory, and pharmacy functions. The second through fifth floors house inpatient wards and various clinics. There is a penthouse for building service equipment. The building is presently 13% fire sprinkled. A contract was recently awarded to add approximately 100,000 SF to the front of the building for outpatient ambulatory care services. Part of this ambulatory care project will renovate 80% of the first floor and will include new fire sprinklers. The existing water services to Building 47 include: a. fire sprinkler standpipe (4-inch supply), and b. fire hose standpipe (6-inch supply). Note: the fire hose standpipe system has been tapped into to provide sprinkler coverage for recent renovation projects. The existing fire alarm system is manufactured by Simplex and consists of three 4100 master panels and twenty-eight 4002 sub panels, servicing 28 fire and smoke zones. There is a smoke purge system controlled by Johnson Controls Metasys. The estimated construction cost range is between $1,000,000 and $2,000,000, and is subject to the availability of funds. All interested parties should submit two copies of forms SF 254 & 255 to the above address. Firms should include all relevant information regarding past projects designed which are similar in type to this project. All responses are to be received by close of business 6/8/99.
