Activities. These activities are conducted to advance understanding of
the total Earth system and the effects of human-induced changes on the
global environment. The overall functions of Airborne Sciences are to:
increase understanding of the Earth as an integrated system; observe
and characterize the entire Earth system using space and airborne
sensors; characterize and understand natural and human-induced change
on global and regional scales with an initial emphasis on climate
change; help identify and predict the consequences of these changes for
human health and welfare; contribute to the creation of wise and timely
environmental policy. ER-2(U-2) and DC-8 aircraft are used to conduct
these research activities. These aircraft have been extensively
modified to perform as flying laboratories. Work encompasses the

qualified and certified pilots forthe ER-2 and other crewmembers
(navigators and flight engineers for the DC-8. Logistics Management,
including supporting all efforts associated with many domestic and
foreign deployments. Engineering and Experiment Integration, including
providing electrical or mechanical design services and other
engineering disciplines such as stress, aerodynamics and
thermodynamics. Aircraft maintenance and Life Support in accordance
with manufacturers service bulletins, Air Force Technical Orders, and
