PARTICIPATION IN THE PARALLELIZATION OF THE FETC CODE MFIX SUBJECT: Participation in the Parallelization of the FETC code MFIX. DESC: The U.S. Department of Energy's Federal Energy Technology Center (FETC), Pittsburgh, PA intends to award a purchase order on a sole-source basis to the Aeolus Research Inc., Normalville, PA. to participate in the parallelization of the FETC code MFIX. Aeolus Research Inc. have been assigned the task to perform several portions of the work as listed. Task #1: Aeolus will evaluate "wrappers" to be used as the message passing template in MFIX. Task #2: Aeolus will modify the "input" section of MFIX to establish the cluster formation. Task #3: Aeolus will follow the logical sequential order of MFIX to paralletizing individual DO loops, other than those in the matrix solvers. Task #4: Aeolus will execute test cases to demonstrate the performance of the parallelized version of MFIX. Task #5: Aeolus will further "tune" the algorithm to increase its computational efficiency, by rearranging computational and communication tasks in order to "hide the latency." This request is considered to be sole source to Aeolus Inc., because their personnel are uniquely qualified to perform these tasks, for the following reasons: 1) The computer software that will be developed under this project must be tailored to the architecture of the computer hardware on which it runs. This will be a "distributed memory" version of the code, to be run on the novel Beowulf style computer we have just built. The code must pass information rapidly between all 24 processors on the machine. In order to do this effectively, the programmer must know the precise configuration of the computer. Aeolus personnel designed and built the machine, they have detailed knowledge of this information that is essential for effective parallelization of the code. 2) The concept of a parallel "distributed memory" CFD code is unique. Aeolus personnel have already modified the Los Alamos code KIVA to run on a Beowulf computer they build at WVU.. Therefore, no solicitation will result from this announcement. This award shall be made using simplified acquisition procedures. Request for information should be addressed to Mr. Robert L. Mohn, FAX 412-892-6216. E-MAIL: mohn@fetc.doe.gov, mohn@fetc.doe.gov.
