is to provide clarifications and answers to questions which were asked
during the Friction Stir Welding (FSW) Facility Walk-Through on
Wednesday, May 26, 1999. QUESTION 1: Statement of Work calls for Phase
II and Phase IIa. Which is which? ANSWER 1: Phase II is the Vertical.
Phase IIa refers to an identical retractable pin tool made for the K&T
Mill. The interface on spindle has a shorter nose. QUESTION 2: What is
the material? ANSWER 2: The material is mainly stainless. The drawings
further specify the materials. QUESTION 3: Are we planning to join any
materials other than aluminum? ANSWER 3: Yes -- Weld copper to
aluminum; MMC Composites to Aluminum; also weld steel and nickel-base
alloys. QUESTION 4: Is there a preference on the load for sensor
control? ANSWER 4: We should be able to handle loads to 15,000 lbs.,
+/- 150 lbs. QUESTION 5: What modifications would have to be made
concerning machining, bolt hole pattern? ANSWER 5: Please see drawings
for details. QUESTION 6: Will NASA support the integration of sensor
to existing hardware/software? ANSWER 6: The Government will take care
of the power supply, interface card, display, and software development
which is designed to table readings. During the Site Visit, a request
was made as to obtaining a sketch of the K&T Mill, showing all required
dimensions. Such a drawing is available upon request. For information
purposes, however, the K&T Mill is a 5-axis Boring Hole Mill, CNC Model
250. The fixture is to be attached to the B Axis, which rotates 360
degrees and is attached with 4 bolts. Each offeror shall include in its
proposal their own method of meeting this requirement. CONTRACTORS
BIDDING ON THIS REQUIREMENT ARE REMINDED THAT THEY MUST SUBMIT A
QUALIFICATIONS STATEMENT ALONG WITH THEIR PROPOSAL. As a result of this
amendment, the closing date for this solicitation is extended to Close
