U.S. ANTARTIC MARINE LIVING RESOURCES (AMLR) PROGRAM SOL 52ABNF900060
DUE 071999 POC POC: Kristina R. Rodabaugh ((206) 526-6379, for copy of
solicitation call (206) 526-6425) TEXT: NOAA's National Marine
Fisheries Service has a requirement for phytoplankton and primary
productivity studies to be accomplished during a research cruise in the
vicinity of the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica, during the months
of January, February, and March, 2000. The cruise will consist of two
30-day legs, with port calls (2-3 days in duration) in Punta Arenas,
Chile, before and after each leg. Four experienced workers are required
for each cruise leg to conduct the studies. The objectives of the
studies include: (1) documentation of the distribution and biomass of
phytoplankton in the upper water column (0 to 750 meters), with
emphasis on the upper 100 meters; (2) determination of the
concentrations of total particulate organic carbon and nitrogen, and
also measurements of inorganic nutrients; (3) determination of the
rates of primary production; (4) determination of the species
composition of the phytoplankton, in addition to measurement of cell
size; and (5) analysis of the importance ofphysical chemical, and
optical characteristics in the upper water column as controlling
factors for the distribution and photosynthetic activity of
phytoplankton. All interested concerns may request a copy of the RFP
and submit proposals which will be considered by the Government Posted
