65 -- CUSTOM DESIGNED METABOLIC CAGES FOR SAMPLE COLLECTION SOL RQ99-032 DUE 061899 POC Brenda Goodwin, 304/285-5882; Contracting Officer, Rex S. Wolfe, Jr., 304/285-5883 The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has a requirement for a quantity of five (5) each of cages specifically designed for metabolic sample collection for our dermal exposure lab experiments. The cages must be large enough to house swine and to prevent food and water contamination of fecal and urine specimens. Delivery is required 90 days after receipt of order. The only source known to have ready-made cages for this purpose is Britz-Heidbrink, Inc, Wheatland, WY. Dimensions of the cage are 9 sq. ft. floor area, 30 inches inside height, and elevated to approximately 3 ft. off the floor. Overall dimensions are: 36" W x 42.5" D x 69" H. The cages are fabricated with type 304 stainless steel with 1-1/4" tube frame and 18 gauge steel panels. The joints are TIG welded and the entire cage unit is mounted on heavy duty plate-type 5" x 2" swivel casters with all stainless steel parts. These cages shall be custom-designed to prevent food and water contamination of fecal and urine specimens with the following features: 1. Food containers are located on the front of the cage, but outside the cage enclosure, preventing food crumbs contaminating urine and fecal samples below. 2. The sliding vertical stainless steel drip panel in the front of the cage will separate the pig from the food (except at feeding times). This will prevent urination on food with it's ancillary radioactive contamination of the room floor, and loss of the urine sample to the collection system. 3. The lower half of the side and back cage walls are stainless steel sheets, preventing loss of radioactive urine and feces from any lateral aspect of the cage. 4. The metabolism (urine) collection pan ends in a collection tube port, to which various lengths of collection tubes can be screwed in. This allows the use of various sizes and heights of collection vials or flasks. 5. The metabolism (urine) collection pan and excreta (feces) screen both slide in horizontally from the front of the cage. The excreta screen will need to be cleared every day, and the slide-out feature will prevent contamination of personnel. 6. Cages are mobile, with the cage floor 30 inches above the ground and a 9 sq. ft. interior. 7. An automatic watering valve with collecting scuppernong is included at the back of the cage, which will allow the animal to have water without the risk of spilling into the urine collection pan (diluting the urine sample). 8. The cage door has a double-pin gravity lock, which can be padlocked secondarily, an important security feature for radiotracer studies such as these. If there are vendors having the capabilities necessary to meet the stated requirements, they are invited to submit appropriate documentation, literature, brochures and references to Brenda L. Goodwin, Reference: RQ99-032, DHHS, PHS, CDC, NIOSH, ALOSH, 1095 Willowdale Road, Morgantown, WV 26505. The Government intends to negotiate on a sole-source basis with Britz-Heidbrink, Inc. unless organizations with an acceptable product respond within 7 daysafter publication of this notice. This notice is issued for informational purposes. Posted 06/10/99 (W-SN341612). (0161)
