D. Lebo, 301-619-2036 The U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel
Command (USAMRMC) has been designated to execute approximately $5
million under the Cooperative DoD/VA Medical Research Program to
support research on topics of concern for the health of both active
duty military personnel and veterans. As the executive agent for this
program, the U.S. Army will solicit proposals from both intramural DoD
and VA investigators, and extramural investigators for research on the
following topics. Topics for Research Proposals: (1) Women's Health
including traumatic stress; (2) Emerging Pathogens; (3) Muscle Repair
Mechanisms and Prosthesis (e.g. Post Polio Syndrome); (4) Home Health
Monitoring (Advance Technology); (5) Innovative Drug Delivery Systems;
(6) Medical Records Transitioning; (7) Sleep Disorders. Research
proposals on these topics are solicited using procedures described in
the USAMRMC Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) 99-1 of December 1998
(available at http://www-usamraa.army.mil). Proposals may address
etiology, diagnosis, treatment or preventive measures. Awards will
normally be limited to a total of $500 thousand per year with a maximum
2-year period of performance. However, proposals with collaborating DoD
and VA co-principal investigators will be eligible for awards up to a
total of $900 thousand per year with a maximum 2-year period of
performance. Partnerships between extramural investigators and DoD or
VA intramural investigators are also encouraged. Awards will be made
based on scientific excellence by extramural peer review and
programmatic relevance by an inter-agency program review panel.
Preliminary Letters of Intent are desirable, should not exceed three
pages, and should include the topic, principal investigator(s),
institutional affiliation, the objective of the research, and a brief
description of the technical approach. Letters of Intent are due no
later than 25 Jun 99, electronic submission is acceptable. For this
program, Letters of Intent supercede the BAA instructions on
preproposals. Complete proposals are due no later than 4 Aug 99, 4:00
p.m., Eastern Time. Clearly mark all proposals as "DoD/VA Medical
