COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF JUNE 16,1999 PSA#2368REACTION OF MOLTEN METALS WITH REFRACTORY CERAMICS Sandia National
Laboratories (Albuquerque, NM), is studying the reaction of molten
metals with ceramics for a number of potential applications. One such
application is improvement of refractory ceramics used in metal
processing through developing a better understanding fundamental
mechanisms of reaction and degradation. Current Sandia research in this
area includes study of reactions between Al and Al alloys and oxide
ceramics such as alumina and mullite. Experimental studies use a
controlled atmosphere high temperature furnace equipped with a mass
spectrometer that can analyze the reaction atmosphere and with viewing
windows that allow the contact angle of the molten metal on the
ceramic to be continuously monitored. Reaction mechanisms are inferred
from analysis of cross sections of the metal-ceramic interface using
various electron analytical methods. Equilibrium phases are calculated
using commercial Gibbs energy minimization software. Sandia is
interested in partnering with industry to apply itsexpertise to ceramic
refractories used in the metals processing industries. Industry
partners must be willing to commit to a significant effort in supplying
well-characterized specimens, in discussions of test results, and in
providing particular analyses of reacted specimens. No Sandia funds
will be provided to the industry partner(s) for their part of the
collaboration. Companies interested in partnering with Sandia should be
willing to join in a collaborative project via a Cooperative Research
and Development Agreement (CRADA). For further information, please
