99 -- REMOVAL AND FURNISHING OF OPTIC AND AXONS FROM GOVERNMENT-OWNED SQUID SOL 263-99-P(GQ)-0048 DUE 080999 POC Dorothy Nickens, (301) 496-0301 The National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Strokes (NINDS) intends to negotiate and award a contract on a sole source basic, for a contract to provided services to pick-up and package Government-owned squid of species Loligo Pealeii to Calamari Inc., P.O. Box 661, Wood Hole, Massachusetts 02543. This action is being taken under the authority 41 U.S.C. 253 (c) (1) (FAR 6.302-1(b). The firm shall pick up Government-owned squid of squid of species Loligo Pealeii from special facilities at the Marine Biological Laboratory, (MBL), 167 Water Street, Woods Hole, MA, where they are collected and stored under a separate direct contract between the Marine Biological Laboratory and the NIH. Using non-government equipment and facilities the Contractor shall remove the optic lobes from squid and quick freeze them in liquid nitrogen, package them in 65 ml metal containers, mark and catalogue them, and deliver them to NIH personnel at the Marine Biological Laboratory or at the NIH as needed and in the quantities given. Axons will be similarly collected and removed but they must be subjected to highly skilled additional dissection to remove smaller associated axons and loose connective tissue before being measured for length (the unit of pricing), frozen, packaged, and stored in liquid nitrogen prior to delivery. It is the responsibility of the contractor to keep all tissues continuously at or below -190C from the time they are dissected until they are delivered to the Government. NIH believes that the above reference firm is the only source that can provide the above requirement. The contract shall be for one (1) year with four (4) twelve-month option periods. Any other firm that feels they are qualified to provide such services must submit by the response date (45 calendar days from date of this publication). Information furnished shall include enough material to perform a proper evaluation. Respondents will not be notified of the evaluation results.
