Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD intends to award on a sole-source basis
with 3M CENTER, St. Paul, MN, 55144-1000 for the purchase of Aluminum
Matrix Composite Cylinders, the aluminum matrix composite from which
the shells will be fabricated must have a demonstrated strength to
failure of 500 kpsi in the fiber direction and modulus of 36 mpsi as
well. Transverse modulus shall be no less than 20 mpsi. The 3M nextel
fiber content shall be no less than 60 PERCENT fiber volume fraction in
a 2 PERCENT copper aluminum matrix alloy. Parts shall be melt-casted or
pre-preg melted with void content less than 1/2 PERCENT, and ends
ground to within 0.001 deg perpendicularity with no more than .002" of
surface waviness. PARTS MUST BE RECEIVED AT US ARMY RESCHEARCH
LABORATORY BY 30 SEPTEMBER, 1999. The Army Research Laboratory has
found no other source that provides the Nextel 610 fibers that is used
