COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF JULY 27,1999 PSA#2396Health Care Financing Administration 7500 Security Blvd., Baltimore,
MD. 21244-1850 R -- IMMUNIZATION OUTREACH PROJECT FOR AFRICAN AMERICAN MEDICARE
BENEFICIARIES SOL na POC Deborah Andrews, 410-786-7229 The Health Care
Financing Administration (HCFA) intends to negotiate on a sole source
basis with the National Medical Association (NMA), the professional
medical society for African American physicians, to work in partnership
on an intervention project to increase the rate of influenza and
pneumococcal pneumonia immunizations in African American Medicare
beneficiaries. The goal of the project is to increase participation in
immunizations among the African American Medicare beneficiary
population from 21-23% to 60% through this partnership. The NMA is
uniquely qualified for this project due to its position as the oldest
professional membership association for African American physicians in
the world with goals to prevent health problems and promote health
lifestyles and to be an advocate to improve the status of health and
the quality and availability of health care to African American and
underserved populations. With chapters in 34 states, DC and the Virgin
Islands, NMA can use their considerable influence to make inroads into
this targeted provider community. See Note 22. Posted 07/23/99
