COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF JULY 29,1999 PSA#2398Defense Information Systems Agency, DITCO-NCR, 701 South Court House
Road, Arlington, VA 22204-2199 D -- REQUEST FOR INFORMATION ABOUT DIRECTORY SERVICES DUE 081799 POC
John Nichols, (703) 681-2233 or Fax (703) 681-2797REQUEST FOR
INFORMATION ABOUT Directory Services REQUEST FOR INFORMATION -- The
Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) is seeking sources capable of
providing a commercial off the shelf (COTS) directory product to be
used for a Directory Service to meet the needs of the Department of
Defense (DOD). DISA uses small to mid-size hardware platforms with the
exception of the Megacenters, which have substantial amounts of IBM
mainframe hardware. Most of DISA's infrastructure is organized around
mid-level SUN, HP and NT servers. DISA is mainly a telecommunications
based organization supporting the warfighter, and its needs differ
somewhat from the traditional telecommunications industry. DISA's
Directory Service must be capable of providing controlled access to
directory information to protect sensitive data, or inhibit the
aggregation of sensitive data, and include fault tolerance and
backup/recovery features. Within DOD, many directories have been
implemented for multiple applications. Any product chosen must be able
to synchronize data to and from these disparate sources on a real-time
basis. The directory product chosen for the DOD Directory Service must
be capable of performing data join/normalization with existing and
future DOD directories based on Netscape, Microsoft Exchange/Active
Directory, Lotus, DCL DMS directories, commercial X.500 directories,
and Novell NDS. The directory product must have a configurable schema
to allow for future changes without directory down-time. DISA is
interested in obtaining written systems specification and supporting
information pertaining to commercial Directory products. This
specification should address the primary Directory characteristics such
as performance, scalability, reliability, and enterprise support
capabilities. Specific areas of interest are available benchmark Test
results for large numbers of entries and accesses per minute, support
for distributed operations (including replication, referral, and
synchronization), Security features (including access control, the
secure management of information and use of Transport Layer Security
(TLS)), support for LDAP V3, a description of the plan for supporting
PKIX, Programming interfaces, and other features that are unique to the
product that will enhance the Directory Service functionality. In
addition, responses should include a description of directory
management tools to allow centralized management of the global
Directory Service. There is no bid package or solicitation document
associated with this announcement. The requested information is for
planning purposes and does not constitute a commitment, implied or
otherwise, that a procurement action will be issued. No entitlement to
payment of direct or indirect costs or charges by the Government will
arise as a result of the submission of contractor's information. The
Government shall not be liable for or suffer any consequential damages
for any proprietary information not properly identified. Proprietary
information will be safeguarded in accordance with the applicable
Government regulations. If there is a GSA or other contract vehicle
already available for the technology being proposed, please include
this information in the response. Firms who wish to respond to this
sources sought should contact John Nichols at Defense Information
