COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF JULY 30,1999 PSA#2399

U.S. ARMY WAR COLLEGE-TECHNOLOGY AND MATERIEL GAME The U.S. Army conducted a Technology and Materiel Game on 26-30 July, 1999, at the U.S. Army War College's Center for Strategic Leadership, Carlisle Barracks, PA. The event was sponsored by the Assistant Secretary of the Army (Acquisition, Logistics and Technology), the Training and Doctrine Command and the Army Materiel Command. The purpose of the game was to assess the Army's current science and technology investment strategies and gain fresh insights and recommend courses of action in shaping future Army investment strategies for emerging and enabling technologies. The game focussed on the strategic business and technology investment decisions needed to assure desired capabilities for the Army in the 2020 era. The game participants included an array of senior research and development managers from across government, academic and private sectors. The players provided insights for shifting the focus of the Army's technology base to be more aggressive, with increased emphasis on exploiting emerging technologies and investments in the private sector, other services, and other government agencies. The input from industry, other government agencies, and academia into the game helped identify technology options for those future warfighting capabilities.
