COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF AUGUST 6,1999 PSA#2404

REQUEST FOR NOTIFICATION OF DRINKING WATER TREATMENT TECHNOLOGIES NSF International (NSF) is requesting that manufacturers and vendors notify NSF by August 13, 1999, if they make or sell package drinking water technologies designed to remove or treat disinfection by-product precursor chemicals (DBP/Ps), arsenic, and/or nitrate or technologies designed to inactivate microorganisms. NSF, as the partner with the EPA in the Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) Package Drinking Water Treatment Systems (PDWTS) pilot, anticipates receiving additional funding designed to validate ETV protocols and conduct verification studies. To accomplish protocol validation and verification activities within the short period remaining for the PDWTS pilot, NSF needs to know how many manufacturers and vendors have techologies that can be verified under ETV Protocols related to DBP/Ps, arsenic, nitrate and microorganism inactivation. Notification does not commit the manufacturer or vendor to participate in or pay for verification activities. NSF and EPA will inform vendors of the EPA matching funds after reviewing proposals from testing organizations. This request also does not commit NSF or the EPA to match funding for verification testing. NSF and the EPA will decide which ETV Protocols to validate based on the response to this notice, whether verification testing was previously (or is being) performed using a certain Protocol, and the priority of Stakeholders. The Stakeholders previously prioritized Protocols based on public health concerns as follows: 1) microbiological; 2) DBP/Ps; 3) nitrate; 4) arsenic; and 5) all others equally. To notify NSF of your interest in participating in future protocol validation and verification activities, complete contact Bruce Bartley at NSF at (734) 769-5148 or complete the form on-line at the pilot's web site (http://www.nsf.org/verification/html/etv_application.html) by August 13, 1999.
