COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF AUGUST 6,1999 PSA#2404

REQUEST FOR TEST SITES NSF International (NSF) is requesting that drinking water utilities (public and private) and regulatory agencies (State, EPA Regions, USDA, etc.) notify NSF by August 13, 1999, if they have a site with disinfection by-product precursor chemicals (DBP/Ps), arsenic, nitrate, and/or microbiological contaminants in the source water that could be used for verification testing. NSF, as the partner with the EPA in the Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) Package Drinking Water Treatment Systems (PDWTS) pilot, anticipates receiving additional funding designed to validate ETV protocols and conduct verification tests. To accomplish protocol validation and verification activities within the short period remaining for the PDWTS pilot, NSF needs to identify locations where the ETV PDWTS pilot could verify the performance of technologies under protocols related to DBP/Ps, arsenic, nitrate and microorganism inactivation (disinfection). Notification does not commit the drinking water utility or regulatory agency to participate in or pay for verification activities. However, when funding is received, NSF will first contact those drinking water utilities and regulatory agencies that submitted a notification. NSF will also give higher priority to those sites willing to cost-share or contribute in-kind services. This request also does not commit NSF or the EPA to match funding for verification testing. NSF and the EPA will decide which ETV Protocols to validate based on the response to this notice, whether verification testing was previously (or is being) performed using a certain Protocol, and the priority of Stakeholders. The Stakeholders previously prioritized Protocols based on public health concerns as follows: 1) microbiological; 2) DBP/Ps; 3) nitrate; 4) arsenic; and 5) all others equally. To notify NSF of your interest in participating in future protocol validation and verification activities, contact Bruce Bartley at NSF at (734) 769-5148 by August 13, 1999.
