Rappoport, srappop@pical.army.mil. ARDEC's Production Metallurgy Team
needs to purchase an arc spark vacuum emission spectrometer that has
the ability to quickly and precisely measure the composition of a
metallic specimen (Part #138773-00). In a matter of seconds, the metals
analyzer shall provide the precise quantities of all the elements in
any metallic specimen. Metals analysis that requires hazardous
materials to dissolve specimens, or individual analyses for each
element, or numerous tubes, or semi-quantitative techniques are NOT
acceptable. Only arc spark techniques that are capable of accurately
viewing the entire emission spectrum from a variety of specimen types
(specimens such as copper, steel, aluminum, titanium, lead, and their
alloys) are acceptable. Specifically, the metals analyzer shall employ
an echelle grating and charge injection device solid state detector.
The metals analyzer shall also employ a spark source with capacitor
discharge at 200 or 400 Hz, an argon flushed sample stand, and peak
current at 11, 25, 40 or 210 A for a duration of 25, 50 or 425
microseconds. The analyzer shall include a detector cooling unit
consisting of a two-stage liquid heat exchanger, and software that
controls analytical operation, performs quantitative analysis,
identifies all wavelengths, controls gas flows and source parameters,
calculates calibration curves, and downloads results in standard,
PC-based format. The analyzer shall include on-site training and
installation, and shall be covered by a minimum one-year warranty. The
Government intends to award this sole source purchase order to Baird
Corporation Franklin, MA 02038. See Note 22 Posted 08/06/99
