http://nais.nasa.gov/EPS/JSC/date.html#9-BH13-46-9-WCS. E-MAIL: Keith
D. Hutto, keith.d.hutto1@jsc.nasa.gov. NASA/JSC is hereby soliciting
information for potential sources for Internation Space Station (ISS)
Waste Collector Subsystem (WCS). The ISS WCS, or space toilet, collects
human urine and fecal matter in a zero-g environment. Urine is
collected by means of a liquid/gas separator. Liquid is pumped into a
storage tank, while the air is passed through an odor/bacteria filter,
then expelled into the crew cabin. Fecal matter is collected by means
of a commode fan developing negative pressure within a fecal
collection area just under the user seat. A bag is placed in the fecal
collection area to capture all fecal matter during defecation. The
fecal bag is placed within a fecal canister after use for subsequent
disposal. There are redundant liquid/gas separators and commode fans.
The ISS WCS was originally developed under a mix of Space Shuttle and
Space Station requirements. Recent events have dictated the need to
fully convert this unit for ISS application. In order to properly
operate the ISS WCS onboard ISS, a few system modifications must be
executed. For example, switching commode fan motors from AC to DC
powered and adding their respective DC motor controllers. Also,
modifying the master controller by removing the AC to DC converter and
incorporating power converters for 120 VDC to 28VDC, 28 VDC to 5 VDC
(for logic board), logic circuitry, and power distribution. Some minor
mechanical modifications will also be necessary, namely involving
installation of check valves, quick disconnects, and associated
plumbing in the fluid lines. The effort will require the design,
development, and certification of all hardware, including design
modifications, to meet applicable ISS specifications. Interested
parties having experience with flight hardware involving electrical
systems, such as motor controllers, motors, and avionic systems should
submit a company portfolio to JSC for further consideration. No
solicitation exists; therefore, do not request a copy of the
solicitation. If a solicitation is released it will be synopsized in
the CBD and on the NASA Acquisition Internet Service. It is the
potential offerors responsibility to monitor these cites for the
release of any solicitation or synopsis. Interested offerors/vendors
having the required specialized capabilities to meet the above
requirement should submit a capability statement of 6 pages or less
indicating the ability to perform all aspects of the effort described
herein. Technical questions should be directed to: Ketan (KC)
Chhipwadia @281-483-7633. Procurement related questions should be
directed to: Keith Hutto @281-483-4165. Please advise if the
requirement is considered to be a commercial or commercial-type
product. A commercial item is defined in Internet "Note A". This
synopsis is for information and planning purposes and is not to be
construed as a commitment by the Government nor will the Government pay
for information solicited. Respondents will not be notified of the
results of the evaluation. Respondents deemed fully qualified will be
considered in anyresultant solicitation for the requirement. The
Government reserves the right to consider a small business or 8(a)
set-aside based on responses hereto. All responses shall be submitted
to Ketan Chhipwadia (KC) no later than August 31, 1999. Any referenced
