karen_riggs@nlm.nih.gov, uyen_phuong@nlm.nih.gov. It is the intent of
the National Library of Medicine (NLM) to procure professional services
on a sole source basis with David Serlin, 652 F Street, N.E., Apt #2,
Washington, DC 20002 to continue his historical services for research
and writing of background and interpretive materials on Nobel Laureates
that are apart of the "Profiles in Science" project of the Digital
Manuscripts program. The additional services will: (1) undertake
historical research held at NLM (reading, analyzing, and writing
interpretive works about the collection) on the life and professional
career of Dr. Martin Rodbell, Nobel-price winner for Medicine or
Physiology for 1994; (2) identify and locate other primary source
materials of or relating to Dr. Rodbell in other collections or
institutes; (3) search the professional literature in the history of
medicine and allied fields and prepare bibliographies relating to Dr.
Rodbell, his professional life, and to the subjects that formed his
field of expertise and research; (4) work with other medical
professionals, historians, archivists, and librarians in understanding
Dr. Rodbell's life and work; (5) assist in the archival process of Dr.
Rodbell's papers at the NLM by sharing expertise and analytical skills;
(6) develop an on-line exhibit that will become part of "Profiles in
Science" by identifying major events and activities in Dr. Rodbell's
professional and research career; writing narrative historical accounts
of these events and activities; and identifying individual documents,
photographs, audiovisual materials, or artifacts to be included in the
digital objects of this exhibit; (7) provide additional services in
locating papers, life and work of other doctors or scientists that are,
or are planned to be included in the "Profiles in Science" project or
other projects of the Digital Manuscripts Program. Dr. Serlin is an
experienced historian, with a Ph.D. in the History of Medicine and
American Cultural History. His work in American Cultural History will
be extremely pertinent in placing Dr. Rodbell's professional life in
the context of the development of biomedical research in the second
half of the twentieth century. Dr. Serlin's knowledge and research in
endocrinology are necessary for the continued development of the
digital exhibit site for Dr. Martin Rodbell, who excelled in this
specific field. This is not a Request for Quotations (RFQ), nor is an
RFQ available, however, all responsible and responsive sources may
submit a proposal which will be considered by the NLM. Firms interested
in responding to this notice must be able to provide professional
service as specified as listed above. Responses should sufficiently
demonstrate the firm's ability to meet the government's requirements.
Responses are required within fifteen (15) calendar days from the
publication date of this notice. NLM synopsis No. NLM 99-124/UHP.
Inquires regarding this procurement may be made to Uyen H. Phuong, Lead
