Coffey, gloria.coffey@msfc.nasa.gov. The MSFC Tribiology Team is
seeking information on the design and manufacture of a hydrostatic
bearing test rig capable of operating within a laboratory environment.
The process fluid shall be water at low to moderate pressures, but not
so much pressure that major safeguards have to be installed. The test
rig should be simplistic in design with no special tooling required to
assemble and disassemble. Time to change out test articles should be
minmized. The test rig can be powered by an electric motor, air, or the
water itself. Rotational speeds shall be in the 5,000 to 10,000 rpm
range. One test bearing is required. A shaft and supporting hardware
are required. The test bearing should have a way to measure the radial
forces pushing against the bearing. The test bearing should be able to
be offset while running. All hardware exposed to water shall be made of
corrosion resistant metal such as stainless steel. Controls for
starting and stopping the motor and data recording must be provided.
Seals and drains are to be used to keep the water from escaping and
getting in areas that would be harmful (floor, electrical controls,
people, etc.). The flow system can be closed-loop on the water supply
with pumps and filters necessary for successful operation. All prints
and operating manuals must be provided to MSFC if purchased. Any unique
features, methods of testing, or data collection of the tester must be
addressed. The tester is to be designed with safe engineering
practices and analysis done where necessary for safety. The goal is to
study hydrostatic bearings with a test rig that is simple and has a
quick turn-around time between test articles. NASA/MSFC plans to issue
a RFP via the internet, on or about October 18, 1999 for the
aforementioned hydrostatic bearing test rig. This Request for
Information (RFI)is for information and planning purposes and to allow
industry the opportunity to verify reasonableness and feasibility of
the requirement, as well as promote competition. Prospective offerors
are invited tosumbit technical comments or questions to Howard Gibson,
ED32, NASA, George C. Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC), Marshall
Space Flight Center, AL 35812, no later than October 4, 1999.
Procurement questions should be submitted to Gloria Coffey, PS22-C,
NASA, George C. Marshall Space Flight Center, Marshall Space Flight
Center, AL 35812. In responding reference RFI 1-9-ED-C5006. Comments
may be forwarded via facsimile or electrionic mail to Mr. Gibson at
256-544-0212 and howard.gibson@msfc.nasa.gov, respectively. This RFI is
not to be construed as a commitment by the Government, nor will the
Government pay for the information solicited. Respondents will not be
notified of the results of the review. Any questions regarding this
announcement should be directed to the identified point of contact. An
ombudsman has been appointed -- See Internet Note "B". The
solicitation and any documents related to this procurement will be
available over the Internet. These documents will be in Microsoft
Office Suite (Word 6.0, Excel 5.0, or PowerPoint 4.0) format and will
reside on a World Wide Web (WWW) server, which may be accessed using a
WWW browser application. The Internet site, or URL, for the NASA/MSFC
Business Opportunities home page is

responsibility to monitor the Internet site for the release of the
solicitation and amendments (if any). Potential offerors will be

amendments, if any. Any referenced notes can be viewed at the following
