The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) plans to award a Purchase
Order to the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research
Center for the completion of a project entitled, _FHWA Pedestrian and
Bicycle Safety Research Technical Information System._ The FHWA
Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Research Program is a multi-year effort
whose focus has been to improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety,
operations and mobility through a comprehensive program of data
collection and analysis, engineering, countermeasure development and
evaluation, promotion and public awareness. The goal of this research
effort reflects those identified in the National Bicycling and Walking
Study to reduce injuries and fatalities to pedestrians and bicyclists
while at the same time increasing walks and bicycling trips. The last
phase of the FHWA_s Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Research Program
project will be delivering the resulting information and products from
this research program to the appropriate audiences by utilizing a web
site format for grouping information and testing progressions of
information to determine the most effective means for linking users
with information relevant to their specific needs. Because the
University of North Carolina performed the initial research and is
familiar with the details of the studies and their reports for this
research program, they are the only known source available that can
complete this project. This is a Simplified Acquisition and the
anticipated award date is September 6, 1999. Posted 08/24/99
