Sinkler, e-mail: vicky.sinkler@ns.doe.gov The U.S. Department of
Energy, Office of Defense Programs has recently completed a study
addressing its cybersecurity needs for computing and networking
systems. As part of that effort a multiyear implementation plan has
been developed to extensively modify and modernize existing
infrastructure across the weapons complex. The infrastructure consists
of information management and computing hardware and software
installations at the weapons laboratories (Los Alamos National
Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Sandia National
Laboratory), the Nevada Test Site, the Production Plants (Y12, Pantex,
Savannah River, and Kansas City) as well as supporting federal
facilities. The new infrastructure will consist of approximately 25,000
nodes in a well-integrated secure network connecting the weapons
complex. Sources are sought for potential solutions to authentication,
authorization, encryption, intrusion detection, usage analysis,
need-to-know controls, configuration auditing, secure applications,
networking and computing hardware and software, systems engineering,
and installation. An industry briefing will be held at the U.S.
Department of Energy Headquarters, Forrestal Building Main
