The Government of Jamaica is seeking a qualified company/institution to purchase and operate the micro-enterprise loan program housed at the Workers Bank. The package that is being offered includes the micro-enterprise loan portfolio, the computer system (hardware and software) to manage the portfolio, office equipment, and the personnel that make up the unit. Any handbooks, records (both electronic and in hard copy) of the portfolio would also be included. The micro-enterprise program began lending operations in October 1996. It provides loans to micro-enterprises that range between J$5,000 (US$131) and J$120,000 (US$3,153). Under the program, the Workers Bank provide the capital for on-lending and has covered some of the operating expenses. USAID has covered some of the start-up costs and continues to cover some personnel expenses and incentive pay. As of July 2, 1999, the portfolio stood at approximately J$30.8 million (US$809,245). Geographic coverage included Ewarton, Spanish Town, Western District, and Portmore. Companies/institutions that are interested in making an offer for this portfolio must clearly show that they have the financial resources, can abide by all applicable laws and regulations of Jamaica and are committed to continuing and expanding geographic coverage of the micro-enterprise lending program.
