89193-8521 A -- CONCEPTUAL DESIGN FOR A MARX DRIVER AND MULTI-CELL VOLTAGE ADDER
SOL 300-EF-99 DUE 090899 POC Emma Fox (702) 295-0507 Fax (702)
295-1702 Sources Sought. Bechtel Nevada is seeking sources to provide
a conceptual design for a Marx Driver and Multi-Cell Voltage Adder. 1.
Conceptual design for either a Marx/PFL or a Marx/Blumlein driver
capable of delivering a negative 750kV, 75-ns FWHM pulse (rise time
< 20ns, fall time < 50 ns) into a load consisting of 4 to 20
cables. These cables will be connected to multi-cell Inductive Voltage
Adder. The cable will be either Dielectric Sciences 2019-1 (2" OD,
48-ohm) or 2158 (1.5"OD, 44-ohm) and are presumed to be rated for
voltages of 750 kV and 450 kV, respectively. Provide an alternative
option of a single, fluid-filled, semi-flexible, transmission line (up
to 150 feet long) that may be more attractive than a large number of
cables. The driver shall have the capability to be operated at the
lower 450kV design point. This can be achieved by lowering the charge
voltage and/or removing or shorting out selected stages of the Marx
generator. The subcontract will propose a method to trigger, which can
include a self-braking switch, the PFL or Blumlein with a 1-sigma
jitter of < 15 ns. The Marx shall have a 1-sigma jitter of <50
ns. 2. Conceptual design options for a multi-cell Inductive Voltage
Adder that can be used to drive various diode sources a t a minimum
voltage of 1.8 MV. The first design shall consider the fabrication of
all new hardware utilizing a 4-cell adder (450 kV per cell) that is
based upon the AWE LINX system. The second design shall utilize a
3-cell adder (750 kV per cell) that is a modification of the Sandia
National Lab SABRE cells. Depending upon the requirements of the diode
load, both adders shall be capable of operating either in negative or
positive polarity supplying currents from 15 kA to 45 kA with a
pre-pulse voltage of less than 15 kV. The subcontractor shall consider
the tradeoffs between one single insulator at the output (oil
insulated stalk) or insulators within each cell (vacuum insulated
stalk) for the 4-cell LINX based option. The interfacing of the diode
source to the multi-cell driver is the responsibility of others
although it may be necessary for the subcontractor to consider generic
interfaces. Interested parties should provide a brief synopsis of
qualifications of the above items (limited to two pages) to Emma Fox,
Fax number (702) 295-1702 no later than September 8, 1999. Posted
