Commerce/NOAA/National Weather Service intends to procure on a
competitive basis a contractor to facilitate a one and one-half day
Second Workshop on International Meteorological Cooperation --
addressing issues and challenges for upgrading a nation's early warning
and disaster preparedness practices with the goal of reducing the
economic and social impacts of natural disaster. The contractor shall
provide the necessary support in making arrangements for the workshop
on International Meteorological Cooperation to be held in conjunction
with the American Meteorological Society's annual meeting in Long
Beach, California, January 2000. The contractor shall meet with the
International Activities Office, other NOAA personnel, and U.S. private
weather industry, media, and academic representatives to set up the
design of the workshop. Contractor shall possess professional knowledge
and experience of the operations of the National Weather Service and
other related NOAA components, especially related to meteorological and
hydrological services. Contractor must also have knowledge and
experience with the various issues being addressed at the work- shop.
They include: developing strategies to improve a nations early warning
and disaster preparedness capabilities and to develop "Best
Pracctices" scenarios. Contractor must have knowledge of the role and
functioning of the World Meteorological Organization and other
international organizations, as relates to the workshop issues. The
contractor services are needed by the National Weather Service from
September 1999 through February 2000. The contractor services will be
required both at NWS Headquarters in Silver Spring and at the American
Meteorological Society meeting in Long Beach, California. Interested
