Laboratory of Biochemistry, intends to procure on a sole-source basis,
a Cryotransfer System, from Gatan, Inc. The Cryotransfer System is
required for the preparation of frozen hydrated specimens for
examination by a Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), manufactured
by Philips Electronic Instrument Co. The Cryotransfer System will be
used for, 1) structure determination of membrane proteins and membrane
protein complexes at atomic resolution and, 2) structure determination
of macromolecular assemblies from single particle imaging studies. The
Cryotransfer System shall have the following features: shall allow
frozen suspensions to be loaded into a TEM holder and transferred
frost-free at temperatures less than minus 150 degrees C to the TEM;
shall be comprised of a single tilt, liquid nitrogen cooled specimen
holder and include tools for the frost-free transfer of grids from the
workstation to the holder; shall allow the specimen temperature to be
measured and varied between the minimum temperature and room
temperature; shall provide power to a second heater used to generate
the cryopump in the liquid nitrogen dewar; shall have an automatic
warm-up cycle for use when removing the sample holder from the TEM and
a zeolite bake-out cycle for holder maintenance, programmed into the
controller; the system shall be completely compatible and work with the
existing Government-owned PhilipsTEM. Shall include: the Cryotransfer
System #626.DH with side entry TEM specimen holder, workskstation,
specimen clamping system, specimen grid holder and, a Smart SCT cooling
holder / dual heater control unit #900.60XX. The Contractor shall
