USDA -- Wenatchee National Forest, Procurement and Property Management, 215 Melody Lane, Wenatchee, WA 98801

Y -- SMITHBROOK TRAIL RELOCATION, LAKE WENATCHEE RANGER DISTRICT, CHELAN COUNTY, WASHINGTON POC Roger Ross, 509/763-3103 Ext 233 The Wenatchee National Forest is currently making available for site review the Smithbrook Trail Relocation project. The bid packet will not be available until 12/99 so potential contractors will want to review this project before the site becomes snow covered. The project site should remain free of snow until late October. The relocated trailhead will necessitate the reroute of the first portion of the existing Smithbrook Trail. This relocated portion of trail would begin at the new trailhead location and then parallel the Smithbrook Road for about 600 feet to the corner of the road switchback. From there the relocated trail will then climb about 350 feet in elevation at about a 12 percent grade through a series of trail switchbacks to an eventual tie, near the Henry M. Jackson Wilderness boundary, with the existing Smithbrook Trail. This reroute is 3920 feet in length. Project also includes construction of two other trail reroutes. These trail reroutes will relocate several upper portions of the Smithbrook Trail to avoid several steep or muddy sections on the existing trail, and to move a portion of the existing trail away from a sensitive meadow area near Union Gap. The middle reroute is 770 feet in length and the upper reroute is 1425 feet in length. The section of new trail that would tie the proposed new trailhead to the existing Smithbrook Trail is located mostly outside of Wilderness; of the 3920 feet of new trail reconstruction in this route there is 1290 feet of Wilderness trail construction. All of the upper and middle trail reroutes are located within the Henry M. Jackson Wilderness boundary. All trail construction activity within Wilderness will be done with non-motorized tools and equipment. Items of work include: Clearing and Grubbing, Excavation and Embankment, Grade Dips, Switchbacks, Talus and Rubble Rock Section, Shallow Stream Fords, and Puncheon. Some blasting will most likely be required to complete the trail construction. New trail construction shall have 32 inches of tread, and on side slopes above 35 percent, the trail shall be full bench. Soils in the area appear to be shallow and rocky. Government Estimate is between $25,000 and $100,000. The District has scheduled an on-site visit for October 9, 1999. Site review attendees shall meet at the Lake Wenatchee Ranger Station, 22976 State Highway 207, at 9:00 a.m. Please phone Roger Ross at (509) 763-3103 Ext 233 to confirm your attendance. If driving from western Washington, you may wish to arrange to be met at the project site at around 10:00 a.m. on that morning, but please call in advance to confirm your attendance.
