SPINS IN SEMICONDUCTORS (SPINS) WORKSHOP Spins IN Semiconductors (SPINS) Workshop, SN99-14. The Defense Sciences Office (DSO) of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is sponsoring a team forming workshop on the utilization of the spin degree of freedom of electrons and nuclei in semiconductors to create a new paradigm for electronics for signal processing and computation for the next millennium. This workshop will be held January 5-7, 2000 at the Doubletree Hotel in Santa Barbara, California. The goals of this workshop are to explore all facets of the research necessary to create a new technology based on the spin degree of freedom of the electron by polarizing and controlling the spin of the electron and also selected nuclei in semiconductors. There are three areas of particular interest. This first area relates to spin quantum effects and spin polarized transport that might be applied to devices such as spin-FETs, spin RTDs, spin LEDs and spin transistors. The ultimate goal here is to add the spin degree of freedom to quantum electronic devices to significantly enhance their performance. A second area of interest is spin coherent effects in semiconductors excited optically or by direct injection. The goal would be to explore the limits of the coherent lifetimes of the spin state and develop new classes of very high speed, very low power electro-optic devices like switches, encoders, decoders, modulators, etc, based on the control of the phase and the propagation of the coherent spin state. The final area of interest is the utilization of the spin of the electron or selected nuclei for quantum information processing. The goal is to understand the science and demonstrate the technology to build prototype spin based devices for the processing, storage and transmission of quantum information. The workshop agenda will feature several technology review overview presentations by government personnel and by contractors, and several poster session forums including summary overviews to facilitate interaction and team forming amongst the participants, in anticipation of a program solicitation later in the year. Participants are strongly encouraged to prepare posters and very short summary overview presentations describing areas of capabilities and interest to facilitate communications, interactions and team prospecting. A short abstract of each poster presentation is required. Please access the SPINS website for workshop details including registration and abstract submission. The website can be accessed at http://www.sainc.com/DARPA/SPINS/. The workshop registration fee is $250.00 and is inclusive of all workshop activities. Registration cutoff is December 6th 1999 or at attendance capacity. Space is limited and it is recommended that you register early. For further administrative information contact Jennie Wise (jwise@snap.org), or for technical and agenda information contact Daryl Treger (treged@cris.com). Please refer to the SPINS Workshop in correspondence. Posted 09/27/99 (W-SN384632).
