THE ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM WILL BE HOLDING ITS 1999 NATIONAL MEETING ON NOVEMBER 15-17 IN SAN JOSE, CA. The Advanced Technology Program will be holding its 1999 National Meeting on November 15-17 in San Jose, California. The conference will feature in-depth workshops along six technology and economic tracks including: biotechnology, chemistry, information technology, electronics, materials and manufacturing, and economic assessment. A description of each of the five technical tracks will be published in the CBD daily. The first track summary is Biotechnology. This track will highlight recent developments and trends in Biotechnology, with a focus on future research directions and commercialization of breakthroughs. The five workshops topics summarized below reflect the forefront of the industry as evidenced by proposal submissions to recent ATP competitions and industry scans by ATP project managers. The workshops include a three-day intensive summary of the cutting edge of the "DNA Chip" industry -- highlighting the accomplishments of the DNA Diagnostics focused program and discussing the developments that are still needed to bring many of these technologies to the marketplace. The next generation of genomics research will be outlined in a half-day seminar on Proteomics. Integrations of the newest developments pushing the envelope of sensivity, durability, and other improvements highlight presentations in Biosensor Technology. R&D driving developments in the emerging field of Plant Biotechnology will be considered in a half-day session. Medical applications of some recent breakthroughs in genetics will be discussed in the New Frontiers in Biotechnology workshop. DNA Diagnostics -- (topics: methods for sequencing, interpreting, and storing DNA sequences for diagnostic applications, miniaturization in genetic analysis, high throughput DNA sequence analysis, mass spectrometry, gene expression profiling, genomic arrays, standards) Biosensor Technology -- (topics: non-invasive and minimally invasive sensor technologies, ultra-high sensitivity detection methods and biosensor economics and future perspectives) Plant Biotechnology -- (topics: applications of plants to the production of insecticides, drugs, human proteins, metabolic modifications and plant genetics economic potential) New Frontiers in Biotechnology -- (topics: gene therapy, delivery systems for drugs and biological products, vaccine development, stem cell applications, cell cycle interventions, and animal transgenesis.) Proteomics -- (topics -- sample collection and fractionation, protein separation, protein analysis, protein characterization and database analysis) The ATP 1999 National Meeting will be hosted by the San Jose DoubleTree Hotel.
