INFORMATION ON CURRENT TECHNOLOGY. This is a request for information
only. This is not a notice of RFP issuance. The purpose of this RFI is
to gather information from commercial enterprises that provide current
or existing Internet portal capabilities. This information is designed
to give the U. S. House of Representatives knowledge of commercially
available technologies and to assist in the development of requirements
and terms of any subsequent, competitive solicitation. Respondents of
interest to the House may be invited to demonstrate their system. The
House has an existing Windows NT network providing connectivity to all
of the offices as well as the Internet. Electronic mail is handled
through an integrated Microsoft Exchange system. The House desires a
technology solution to provide an Internet portal that (a) Is able to
deal with the heterogeneous environment of the House in terms of
Internet browsers, office suites, and applications specific to a
particular office or site. (b) Provides a secure browser based
interface to desired applications and information (c) Is customizable
by individual users (d) Employs knowledge management tools to access
information resources inside, as well as outside, the House environment
The House welcomes any information received from interested parties.
Specifically, please respond to the following: 1. What are the best
practices of commercially developed portals deployed in large
organizations with a nationwide scope? 2. What commercially available
technologies exist to provide secure Internet portal management
capabilities to complex and distributed customer bases? 3. What is the
scope of a deployment effort of such a commercially available product
in the House of Representative's environment? 4. What types of
information are required to effectively respond to a solicitation based
upon these requirements? 5. What are the terms and conditions under
which such services and products would be supplied? 6. What performance
and acceptance measures are commonly employed in these technologies? 7.
What customers currently use the suggested technology? This Sources
Sought Notice is initiated to compile a list of companies that can
provide assistance to HIR in the development of a comprehensive, secure
Internet portal system for the House of Representatives and its support
offices. Interested parties may identify their interest and capability
to respond to the requirement. Written responses are due no later than
November 29, 1999. Interested parties shall provide a letter stating
that they can meet the minimum needs along with company name, address,
telephone number, fax number, point of contact, e-mail addresses and
