The Office of Law Enforcement Technology (OLETC), a program of the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), is initiating procedures to commercialize a unique wireless personal location system for the field of corrections. This technology, called the Personal Alarm Monitor (PAM), is being designed to provide real-time, accurate location awareness of a correctional officer or staff member in need. The technology uses a unique Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technique with ruggedized hardware to provide a lifeline to facility security for individuals under duress. This technology has been developed under a cooperative agreement with NIJ during the FY '98 and FY '99 time periods and has been demonstrated in a Federal correctional institution. A patent application has been filed and is pending. A market research (technical need) survey has been completed to validate the need and requirements within a representative sample market for the field of corrections. This technology has significant domestic and international potential as a state-of-the-art approach to identify and locate personnel indoors with minimal infrastructure. Potential market applications are corrections, psychiatric institutions and nuclear facilities. This is a preliminary announcement concerning the intent to organize and conduct a commercialization partnership workshop for this technology at the OLETC office in Wheeling, WV on December 16, 1999. Any person or organization that has an interest in attending this meeting, with the possible interest to license or commercialize this technology, should contact: Mr. F. Wayne Barte, Project Manager, or Ms. Robin Lotz, Market Research Analyst, OLETC, 316 Washington Avenue, Wheeling, WV 26003 Phone: (888) 306-5382 Fax: (304) 243-2131 email: fbarte@nttc.edu and rlotz@nttc.edu Posted 11/24/99 (W-SN403434).
