E-MAIL: Kathy Hansen, khansen@pica.army.mil. The U.S. Army-Tacom-ARDEC,
Picatinny Arsenal, NJ is conducting a market survey to identify
potential sources for the TRANSFER/COMPRESSION MOLDING OF THERMOSET
PLASTIC TAIL FINS FOR THE M931, 120MM MORTAR PRACTICE CARTRIDGE.
Procurement POC e-mail is khansen@pica.army.mil. TACOM-ARDEC is seeking
sources with the capability of molding tail fins with the dimensions
shown in simplified schematics. Detailed information of the fin is
included in Drawings #12957022 and #12957021 which will be furnished
upon request. The tail fin would be press-fit or adhesively bounded to
an aluminum tail boom, Drawing #12957021. The tail fin is currently
made from aluminum but the performance of thermoset plastic fins are
currently being evaluated for potential improvements in performance and
cost over the standard aluminum fin. To date the best candidate plastic
fin is transfer molded from a 60 weight percent glass fiber-reinforced,
vinylester polyester, thermoset plastic. Performance requirements
include uniform dimensions, resistance to the high temperatures
encountered in mortar barrels, and superior toughness for both rough
handling and also for a 6.5 feet bare drop safety requirement for the
fin while installed on a cartridge that weighs approximately 31 pounds.
Potential buys of 50-80k or 80-110k plastic fins are possible in the
2001m timeframe. Interested suppliers should contact the POC for
drawings and additional information. TACOM-ARDEC requires informa- tion
on production methods, materials, delivery, and projected unit part
costs to the government for the two stated quantities. Interested
companies are encourage to submit their responses and ideas to the
Contract Specialist. THIS IS NOT A REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL. Particpation
in this market survey will not affect a company's position during any
future solicitation. The Government does not intend to award a contract
on the basis of this market survey or otherwise pay for the information
provided. NO basis for claims against the Government shall arise as a
result of a response to this market survey or Government use of such
information. The Government reserves the right to reject, in whole or
in part, any private sector input as a result of this market survey.
