HCFA intends to procure all rights to this number to prevent confusion with HCFA's 1-800 MEDICARE number. HCFA's number was established pursuant to 42 U.S.C. & 1395w-21(d)(5)(1999) to facilitate broad dissemination of information to beneficiaries. It is not feasible to compete this requirement since only one responsible source has rights to this number that will satisfy HCFA's requiremtns.
