A -- LAWRENCE LIVERMORE NATIONAL LABORATORY SEEKS INDUSTRIAL PARTNERS TO COMMERCIALIZE HAND-HELD GAS CHROMATOGRAPH SYSTEM SOL CBD00-007 DUE 022200 POC Industrial Partnerships and Commercialization, (925) 422-6416 WEB: Respond in writing within 45 days by filling out the, http://www.llnl.gov/IpandC/op96/portgaschrom-form.html. The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), operated by the University of California under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy is seeking industrial partners to commercialize a hand-held, low-power, gas chromatograph originally developed for the Laboratory's Nonproliferation and Arms Control Program. Conventional gas chromatographs (GCs) are commonly used for process control in the manufacture of a variety of products including petrochemicals and natural gas. GCs are also used in environmental and industrial hygiene applications. The downside of these machines is their large size and long analysis times. The hand-held, self-contained GC has overcome these limitations through the use of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology. The lightweight (less than 8 pounds) and compact size (8 in x 5 in) of the device makes it convenient, with reduced space requirements, and less costly to transport to remote locations. Fast analysis times allow for the results to be viewed immediately (typically chemical analyses of light gases can be performed in less than one minute). The hand-held GC has been designed to make accurate and timely analyses without sacrificing quality. This technology also enables users to transport the instrument to the sample rather than transporting the sample to the instrument; thereby reducing cost of analysis and reducing the chance for sample contamination or volatilization. The lightweight and compact nature of the system, combined with its fast analysis time and low power, would enable the unit to be used in a wide range of government and commercial applications. Possible applications range from air quality monitoring and emission control to manufacturing process control, healthcare, and others. Licensees and collaborators are sought with technical and scientific expertise in the areas of analytical instrument development and MEMS-based manufacturing. Successful industrial partners will have an established history and consistent record of research and development, and experience and expertise in MEMS fabrication, manufacturing and marketing of portable analytical instruments and/or sensors. If you are interested in working with LLNL to commercialize or further develop the GC system, please respond in writing within 45 days of this announcement by filling out the form located at: http://www.llnl.gov/IpandC/op96/portgaschrom-form.html. THIS IS NOT A PROCUREMENT. Posted 01/07/00 (W-SN414080). (0007)
