daviaj@inel.gov. A-Treatment planning method and software for targeted
radionuclide therapy and brachytherapy. Bechtel BWXT Idaho, LLC,
(BBWI) the prime operating contractor for the Department of Energy
(DOE) at the Idaho National Engineering & Environmental Laboratory
(INEEL) has developed a new treatment planning software technology for
use in neutron radiotherapy that also has potential applications in
standard photon radiotherapy. The subject software offers an accurate,
and very fast, medical-image-based method for computation of
therapeutic radiation dose distributions. Unique features of the
technology include sophisticated pixel-based patient geometry
reconstruction from medical images as well as integer-based numerical
geometric interrogation coupled with appropriate full three-dimensional
Monte-Carlo based radiation transport modules. This permits precise,
patient-specific target and peripheral organ definition and extremely
fast numerical computations of radiation flux and dose distributions.
This software is used for therapy planning in clinical Boron Neutron
Capture Therapy and it will be introduced for use in fast-neutron
therapy over the next year or so. With some relatively straightforward
modifications, the software could be adapted for use in standard
external-beam photon radiotherapy, targeted radionuclide therapy, and
brachytherapy. This would create a fast-running (~5 minutes per field
on single-CPU pentium-type equipment) treatment planning system that
has full three-dimensional Monte Carlo capabilities. BBWI is seeking a
commercial partner to sponsor the necessary modifications to the
software in return for specified exclusive commercial rights to the
modified product. This is not an opportunity to provide goods or
services to BBWI or the Department of Energy. This Request for Interest
(RFI) will close to response 30 days after publication. Interested
parties should send e-mail to daviaj@inel.gov (Alan Davis, Account
Executive, Technology Transfer Office, BBWI). If you do not have e-mail
access, send regular mail to Alan Davis, Account Executive, Technology
Transfer Office, BBWI, P. O. Box 1625, Idaho Falls, ID 83415-3805.
