Background "The Next Generation Small Loader (NGSL) program will provide a 25,000 pound capacity self- propelled air cargo transport/loader to support all military cargo aircraft and the Civil Reserve Air Fleet aircraft. The NGSL loader will be air transportable on Air Force C-130, C-141, C-5, and C-17 military aircraft. The NGSL will be used to move cargo from loading areas to the aircraft as well as loading and unloading the aircraft themselves. This program is being conducted in two phases. The first phase is in progress, and has already resulted in delivery of 3 prototype loaders from each of two companies. These prototype loaders will be used for a series of tests this fall and winter. Proposals will be submitted in Feb 00 for the production version of the loaders, and a single contractor will be selected no later than Jun 00 to produce 264 units along with logistics support for a number of years.
