Grahovac, pg2@inel.gov. A -- Low sulfur cat-cracked gasoline. This is
a potential technology development and licensing opportunity with
Bechtel BWXT Idaho, LLC (BBWI), the prime operating contractor for the
Department of Energy at the Idaho National Engineering and
Environmental Laboratory (INEEL). Environmental restraints are forcing
the refining industry to produce transportation fuels of ever
decreasing sulfur levels. While improvements in fuel quality over the
past one to two decades has been remarkable, further marked decreases
in sulfur levels of gasoline and diesel are being mandated. The great
majority of sulfur compounds in the total gasoline pool originate from
the cat-cracked blend feedstock. The conventional method of reaching
lower sulfur levels is to increase hydrotreating severity. There are
definite drawbacks to increased hydrotreating severity for cat- cracked
gasoline: high hydrogen consumption and lowering of octane number. The
conventional thought regarding the origin of the sulfur compounds in
cat-cracked gasolines is that they are fragments of larger molecules in
the cat cracker feed. Other work, however, has indicated that the
sulfur compounds in cat-cracked gasoline are not fragments of the feed
but were formed by other processes. The INEEL is beginning a project
with the objective of exploring manipulation of these processes with
laboratory scale cat-cracking studies to produce low sulfur cat-cracked
gasoline. BBWI is seeking a written indication of interest from
companies interested in providing to the project a technical in-kind
(non-cash) contribution having a value of at least $50K, or an
equivalent cash contribution, or combination of the two. This would
involve a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with
certain patent licensing opportunities for the participating partner.
This is not an opportunity to provide goods or services to BBWI or the
Department of Energy. This Request for Interest (RFI) will close to
response 30 days after publication. Interested parties should send
e-mail to pg2@inel.gov (Paul Grahovac, Senior Account Executive,
Technology Transfer & Commercialization, BBWI). If you do not have
e-mail access, send regular mail to Paul Grahovac, Senior Account
Executive, Technology Transfer & Commercialization, BBWI, P. O. Box
