The U.S. Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Lab plans to purchase an On-line Mercury Continuous Emissions Monitor for flue gas applications. Performance and design requirements include: separation of the mercury into an inert carrier gas for detection by atomic fluorescence to allow sub part per billion detection limits without interferences from other flue gas components; a modular design that would allow the sample trap module and detector module to be easily transported between the bench-scale and pilot-scale location, while allowing the individual sample conditioning systems to remain in place; flexibility in measuring a wide range of elemental and oxidized mercury concentrations by adjusting the sample flow rate and/or sampling time, without altering the operating conditions of the detection unit; precision within +/- 20% for total mercury at concentrations below one microgram per normal cubic meter in flue gas, as determined by comparison with results from simultaneous sampling with either the DRAFT ASTM method or EPA Method 101A; and successful performance in similar applications documented by past research efforts. The procurement anticipates a supported demonstration phase followed by a decision on whether or not to acquire the equipment. This purchase is considered sole source to PS Analytical.
