TO COMMERCIALIZE AN ERGONOMIC MATERIAL HANDLING DEVICE SOL 00-008 DUE

423-3139 The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), operated by
the University of California under contract with the U.S. Department of
Energy is seeking industrial partners to commercialize and license a
technology that allows a broad consumer market the ability to move
heavy objects in a ergonomically correct posture. The new technology
provides the design and adjustability of handles that can be adapted to
virtually any material handling device. Companies that manufacture
material handling devices may benefit because it helps reduce workers'
compensation costs and improve productivity. The technology can be
used in virtually any industry that moves heavy material such as waste
handling, shipping, parcel post, moving and warehouse. It also has
non-industrial applications for public and private industry and
potential for use in homes. The major benefits to the design are that
it: (1) provides a one-size-fits-all device which is both essential and
practical for the ergonomics of moving heavy items, (2) optimizes the
ergonomic postures of the wrist, shoulder, and back, and (3) assists in
avoiding ergonomic-related injuries associated with material handling
(the number one expense for workman's compensation in industry).
Prototypes of material handling devices incorporating the technology
have been built and tested with extremely positive results. Companies
interested in working with LLNL to commercialize the technology should
provide a written Letter of Interest that includes a description of
corporate capability relevant to commercialization of the technology
and basic corporate information. Respondents are encouraged to provide
ancillary documentation such as annual reports, corporate resumes, and
technical publications. THIS IS NOT A PROCUREMENT. All Letters of
Interest must be received within 60 days of this announcement. Please
send Letters of Interest to Eddie Scott, Business Development
