Information Systems, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious
Diseases (NIAID), National Institutes of Health (NIH) is planning to
invest in new storage technology to support the business needs of the
NIAID. The mass storage systems will be used to store and provide user
access to a wide variety of applications and files serving clinical,
biomedical research, grants management, and administrative users. File
sizes range to multiple gigabytes. Therefore, the NIAID is seeking
sources capable of providing the following technical capabilities in a
mass storage system: Usable 2.0 TB installed storage expandable to 6.0
TB or more capacity over the nest 3 years; Native support of UFS, EFS,
NTFS, FAT32, FAT16, MacOS HFS+; Directly interface with at least 8
facilities within a 10km geographic area over government-provided fiber
optic connections and remote service to at least two continental US
sites over government-provided telecommunications facilities; Interface
fully with Microsoft WindowsNT, Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft
Windows 9x, Apple Macintosh MacOS, Apple Macintosh OS X Server, Linux,
Sun Solaris, SGI IRIX; RAID and integrated, high-speed tape
backup/restore solution supporting listed operating systems, plus
Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SQL server, Sybase, and Oracle; User
controlled management system for configuration, maintenance, security,
backup, and accounting; Fault tolerance capabilities such as
mirroring. Any system hardware/software and user controlled management
system must be currently in production and installed at least one
customer location. Vendor responses/capability statements should
include a complete technical description of their system that meets
NIAID's requirements. Vendors should specifically describe RAID levels
supported, compatibility with required platforms, reliability and mean
time between failures, the user controlled management system, capacity
and expandability, system configuration, space and environmental
requirements, electrical power and floor loading requirements.
Maintenance features such as automated trouble reporting, warranty, and
OEM support should also be described in detail. In addition vendors
should provide a point of contact to arrange for government staff to
visit an in service system. Vendors are also asked to advise whether
the product is available only from the manufacturer or through
resellers. Interested parties please submit a capability statement in
sufficient detail as to allow for proper evaluation of resources and
related experience, including references for past performance.
