APBI WILL PROVIDE AN OVERVIEW OF THE SMART SENSOR WEB INITIATIVE AND
THE PROCESS BY WHICH INDUSTRY CAN BE INVOLVED. THE SMART SENSOR WEB
(SSW) INITIATIVE IS A MULTI -- FACETED SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
INITIATIVE WHICH IDENTIFIES CRITICAL COMPONENTS OF A SURVEILLANCE AND
RECONNAISSANCE 'SYSTEM OF SYSTEMS' [COLLECTION/SENSORS;
CONNECTIVITY/COMMUNICATION; COMPUTATION/COMPUTER PROCESSING, STORAGE,
AND DATA PRODUCING AND MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE; CONNOTATION/CONTEXT DISPLAY
AND VISUALIZATION; COGNITION/JUDGE, DECIDE AND ACT FUNCTIONS.] SSW
INCLUDES FIVE SUB-WEBS [IMAGEWEB, WEATHERWEB, WEAPONWEB, SIMULATIONWEB,
AND INFORMATION INTEGRATION WEB] WITH EACH SUBWEB HAVING SPECIFIC
OBJECTIVES AND SCHEDULES WHICH TOGETHER DEFINE THE SSW INITIATIVE AND
ASSOCIATED COMPONENT TECHNOLOGIES, AS WELL AS ADDRESS FUTURE
DEVELOPMENT. TAKEN ALL TOGETHER, THESE EFFORTS BY EACH SUBWEB DEFINE
SSW AS AN ACTUAL "SYSTEM OF SYSTEMS" AND ESTABLISHES A TESTBED AND
EVALUATION PROCEDURE FOR THE SYSTEM AS A WHOLE. IN AUGUST, AN
EXPERIMENT WILL ADDRESS SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY ISSUES FOR SSW AT THE
TACTICAL LEVEL WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF MILITARY OPERATIONS WITHIN
URBANIZED TERRAIN (MOUT). FUNDS ARE PROVIDED BY ODUSD (S&T) TO: CREATE
BASELINE CAPABILITY; LEVERAGE ON-GOING RESEARCH EFFORTS; AND DEVELOP
A TESTBED FOR EVALUATION OF RELEVANT TECHNOLOGY. AN INITIAL EXPERIMENT
WILL BE CONDUCTED IN AUGUST 2000. THE APBI FORMAT WILL BE AN OVERVIEW
OF THE ENTIRE INITIATIVE, INCLUDING DETAILS FROM EACH WEB AND THE
PROCESS BY WHICH INDUSTRY CAN PARTICIPATE. THIS WILL BE FOLLOWED BY AN
AFTERNOON INDIVIDUAL QUESTION AND ANSWER SESSION (SCHEDULING 10-MINUTE
APPOINTMENTS WITH EACH SUBWEB REPRESENTATIVE FOR THAT AFTERNOON WILL
OCCUR DURING THE MORNING OF THE APBI.) TECHNICAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE
