SOL N47408-00-R-8883 DUE 032400 POC Ms. Carol Contreras, 805-982-5195, 805-982-3015, contrerascm@slc.navfac.navy.mil This is a sources sought for manufacturers of FRP appurtenances such as handrails, grating, light poles, ladders, etc. The purpose of this announcement is to identify potential materials for Navy demonstration projects that will demonstrate the benefits of FRP appurtenances. One of the proposed demonstrations is to install FRP grating for the Coastal Systems Station Dahlgren Division of the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Panama City, Florida. The grating should be capable of supporting 8000 lbs., UV resistant and anti-skid. Because machinery such as forklifts and electric pallet trucks will be using the double beam portion of the bridge as a "walkway" to transit devices to the test platform, the grating should be as smooth as possible. The location of the new SAS Trolley Bridge and Test Platform is in non-magnetic area. The construction materials are required to be non-magnetic, salt resistant, durable and low maintenance. Other FRP appurtenances such as railings will also be employed. Composite materials meet these special requirements of this project. Another demonstration is slated for Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Arizona. Metal handrails exposed to the intense heat of the Arizona desert can reach temperatures of up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit posing a burn hazard. FRP handrails would be much cooler to the touch and can provide a safe environment where handrails are necessary. NOTE: THIS IS NOT A REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL.
