will hold the conference May 9-11, 2000 at the Kossiakoff Center of
Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, MD.
Commercial industry is currently creating the global communications
grid, launching imaging satellites, mapping the world, and proposing
commercial navigation services. Ease of use in peacetime, expedience in
crisis, and decreasing budgets mean that military systems in the future
will increasingly depend on COTS technology. The continued
technological superiority of the U.S. will depend on rapidly,
exploiting critical commercial technology for military purposes. At the
same time the key requirements of availability, survivability, control
and security must be preserved and enhanced. What is the operational
and technical strategy for a combined commercial and military
infrastructure? What are the implications for DoD investments in
technology to make these combined infrastructures robust? Where should
the DoD invest so that it leverages but does not duplicate commercial
investments? How do the S&T and the R&D communities work together to
rapidly assimilate developments in technology into the military
infrastructure? Following areas will be covered during the conference:
Session 1 -- Future Military Operations and Systems Session 2 --
Emerging Commercial Systems Session 3 -- Emerging Military Systems
Technology Session 4 -- Future Technology Insertion Business Models
