Leondi, kleondi@pica.army.mil. The U.S. The U.S. Army TACOM-ARDEC is seeking firms interested in the fabrication of 3,500 Portable Inductive Artillery Fuze Setters (PIAFS). PIAFS is a hand held electronic device that sends mission data to a fuze via an inductive transmit coil and receives a return message from the fuze via the same coil to verify that the fuze received the correct data. PIAFS has an aluminum housing, three push buttons that are used to enter mission data, a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) and a chassis-mounted connector that is used to accept mission data from a fire control system. PIAFS is powered by two alkaline "D" cells or by a lithium battery when operation in very cold environments. PIAFS may also be powered externally through the connector.ARDEC is currently performing qualification tests on PIAFS with type classification planned for the third quarter of FY2000. It is highly desirable that the contractor have previous experience with the inductive setting system used by the US Army and with inductively settablefuzes such as the M762 and M782. The contractor shall have past experience with the fabrication of ruggedized electronic systems for military applications. In particular, the contractor shall have expertise in the design and fabrication of custom tooling and as well as the development of processes for the manufacture and/or assembly of Printed Wring Boards (PWBs), inductive coil assemblies, aluminum housings, batteries, and other electrical and mechanical components. The contractor shall have expertise in the design and fabrication of electronic testers that will verify that circuit boards and fully assembled PIAFS setters function properly over the full range of operating conditions including, temperature, humidity, vibration, salt, fog and immersion. The contractor shall have a quality control plan in place to assure that assembly and test procedures comply with drawings and specifications and that standards of good workmanship are followed.
