The equipment must be capable of processing clean as well as food-contaminated plastic. The waste must also be compacted and sanitized during the process cycle, making it suitable for long-term storage aboard ship. The following are desired, but not mandatory, characteristics of the subject equipment: Equipment should be compact in size, with a footprint not greater than 2 feet X 3.5 feet, less that 6.5 feet tall and should fit through a 26-in hatch. Equipment should be corrosion resistant as it has to operate in a marine environment. Equipment must be capable of being safely operated by one person. The compacted waste should be safe and easy to handle. A minimum plastic volume reduction of 25:1 is required. A minimum waste throughput of 5 pounds per hour is required. Equipment should be capable of passing shipboard environmental testing, including shipboard shock, vibration and EMI. Equipment must be capable of operating off of standard shipboard services. Equipment should come with technical documentation that outlines operation procedures, routine maintenance requirements, troubleshooting procedures, and adjustment/repair procedures. Equipment should require minimal manning, maintenance or training to operate and maintain. Equipment should be logistically supportable. Equipment should be rugged and capable of withstanding rough handling. Equipment should be fully supportable in a shipboard environment. Equipment should produce no secondary waste streams or emissions. The initial requirement is for approximately 200 units with the potential for 600 additional units over the next 5 years. Potential sources with an off-the-shelf technology that would meet the criteria specified above are requested to provide information describing their product lines.
